Honduras Adventures: Tegucigalpa

Wednesday, 8/30/06 – Thursday, 8/31/06

I was a little disappointed with our smooth landing in Tegucigalpa, since the descent is sometimes called the “stop and drop,” but finally seeing Erinn and Kelly at the airport helped me get over that pretty quickly. After a series of death-defying traffic maneuvers, Erinn managed to get the four of us to Todd’s house safely, where we spent a few hours catching up, and Ross and I tried to process the fact that we were actually in Central America. We all met up with Todd at a coffee shop across from the embassy when he was done with work, and later we had our first Central American meal - pupusas.

The next day we tried to figure out which cities in Central America we wanted to invade before heading to Xela, Guatemala for language school. We also discovered some quality Honduran TV that included

  • A music video chronicling a couple’s romance and breakup through a few symbolic rounds of bowling and pool

  • An infomercial for a “sauna belt” that, from what we could gather from the “before/after” pictures, helped people to look slimmer by sucking in their stomachs. One sauna belt wearer was so excited about this that she triumphantly threw her fist in the air while looking at herself in the mirror.
